Yes! Many basic calculators skip this. We let you set when the battery needs replacement (anywhere from 3 to 10 years) and how much it costs. Even after adding battery replacement, EVs usually come out cheaper over 5 to 7 years of ownership.

Why is an EV so much cheaper to run than a petrol vehicle?

Electric motors use energy much more efficiently. They're about 3 to 4 times better than petrol engines. For example, a typical electric scooter costs around ₹0.30 to ₹0.50 per km, while a petrol scooter costs ₹2 to ₹3 per km. EVs also have fewer parts that wear out, so maintenance is cheaper too.

What electricity rate should I enter in the electric car running cost calculator?

Use the rate you pay at home. In most Indian states, home electricity is ₹5 to ₹10 per kWh (unit). If you charge at a public station, it's usually ₹12 to ₹18 per kWh. The default is ₹8/kWh, which is a typical home rate.

The defaults are set for India (rupee currency, Indian fuel and electricity prices). But you can change every input. Prices, mileage, the currency doesn't matter for the math. So yes, it works anywhere. Just update the numbers to match your country.

Yes. EVs have a lower 5% GST compared to 28% for petrol vehicles, and many states like Delhi, Maharashtra, and Gujarat offer extra discounts. There are also income tax benefits under Section 80EEB. Our calculator does not include these subsidies, so your actual savings might be even higher than what we show.

How do you calculate EV running cost per km in India?

Accepted Answer

To find the cost, divide your electricity rate by how many kilometers your vehicle gets per unit. For example, if you pay ₹8 per unit and your scooter goes 35 kilometers per unit, your cost is about ₹0.23 per kilometer. Our calculator does this math for you automatically.

Accepted Answer

Yes. CNG costs around ₹2.50 to ₹3.50 per km for a car, while an EV costs ₹1.00 to ₹1.50 per km on home charging. That's roughly 2 to 3 times cheaper.
